Partnership for Knowledge

Partnership for Knowledge – PfK – is a higher education initiative of the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development aimed at providing life-changing opportunities to researchers, public administration officers, social entrepreneurs and young leaders who are committed to developing their professional and academic skills; strengthening their capacities; widening their networks; making a difference in their home contexts and experiencing the Italian culture.

The programme, funded in years 2019-2022 by the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development in partnership with several Italian universities, offers a number of Master of Science scholarships and PhD fellowships in the following thematic domains, grouped in four academic platforms:

Rural development and Spatial management
Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene – W.A.S.H.
Sustainable energy, Environment and Industrial innovation
Cultural heritage and Sustainable tourism

The University of Pavia is the coordinator of the “Health and W.A.S.H.” (Water Sanitation and Good Hygiene) platform, in partnership with the Universities of Brescia, Parma, Turin, Trieste and Rome “La Sapienza”. The project lasts three years, starting from the Academic Year of 2019/2020, and includes the assignment of scholarships to students that come from priority countries for international cooperation. It includes the attendance of Master’s Degrees and PhD. The 19 selected students come from the following countries: Ethiopia, Jordan, Pakistan, Palestine and Sudan, and are distributed among the Italian partner Universities of the project. Students will have a complete exemption from University fees during all the attendance period. Pavia hosts six students coming from Palestine, Sudan and Jordan, who are following the courses in English: PhD in genetics and Molecular Biology and Translational Medicine and Master’s Degrees (Molecular Biology and Genetics e Economics, Finance and International Integration).

 

Institutional and Academic Strengthening of the Somali National University Project – UNS5

The project, funded by AICS, aims to:

  • Create higher education opportunities dedicated to young people from the Somali National University through the economic provision for  following PhD courses, Master’s degrees and Specialization Activities in the field of medicine.
  • Continuation with the ongoing UNS 3 project, offering young Somali high-level tertiary training opportunities, in order to contribute to the institutional, economic and cultural growth of the country, contribute to the strengthening of the educational, cultural, scientific research and management skills of the Faculties involved in the program, such as Law, Medicine, Veterinary, Agriculture, Engineering and Economics, as well as the UNS as a public institution.

Total financing of the project € 2,019,786.00, contribution from the AICS € 1,945,260.00, distributed to the project partners: Politecnico di Milano (coordinator), University of Bari, University of Bologna, University of Florence, University of Naples “Federico II”, University of Pavia, Sapienza, University of Rome, University of Roma Tre, University of Trieste.

The project started in the 2022/23 a.y. and saw the arrival in Pavia of the first group of six Somali doctors. The second group of six other doctors will be hosted in Pavia in the 2023/24 academic year. Students are attending the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetric Gynecology at the San Matteo Polyclinic in Pavia and some classes from the Harvey degree program.

 

Bukavu project

The University of Pavia has joined an International Cooperation Agreement with the Catholic University of Bukavu, Congo, signed on 06/09/2012 and renewed on 20/02/2019. The agreement, which provides for the sending of students from the Catholic University of Bukavu to the University of Pavia, was financed with the sum of €. 8.101 collected by the Rotary of Pavia. 

The Catholic University of Bukavu has selected Prof. Jean Dominique Uyergiu to attend the biennial Master in Computer Engineering starting from the academic year 2022/23. Mr. Uyergiu arrived in Pavia in December 2022, and is hosted at the Seminary of Pavia and assisted in all logistical and educational aspects.

 

Multimedia classes for students from developing countries

CICOPS started a collaboration with KIROLAB, the University multimedia lab, to record Pathological Anatomy and Cardiology classes in order to create Anatomy labs using the Automage system. The classes are published on KIROLAB, that will be accessible for all the partner Universities of the developing countries. Some retired Professors decided to contribute by giving classes that cover other fields of Medicine (genetics, physics, anatomy…), which will soon be recorded and published on the platform.

 

Cooperation with the “Université Evangélique du Cameroun”

The University of Pavia has formed a cooperation agreement with the Université Evangélique du Cameroun with the intention of strengthening the academic, technical and scientific collaboration between the two institutions. In particular, the University of Pavia is committed to supporting the organization of the first course of Biomedical Engineering in the country at the Université Evangélique du Cameroun. In addition, it is committed to promoting the role of Clinical Engineering in hospitals in the region.

 

Support to African Hospitals – Pavia–African Hospitals / Universities cooperation program

The Pavia-African Hospitals Project wants to contribute to a strengthening of the higher education sector in African countries so that they can reduce their dependence on Western countries. 

The main objective is to help partner institutions to improve the professional preparation of their staff and students, not only in the medical field but also in the fields of agronomy, law, economics and computer engineering.

Throughout 2020, cooperation continued with the Hospitals of Ayamé (Ivory Coast), Ziguinchor (Senegal), Chirundu (Zambia), Lacor (Uganda), Bor (Guinea Bissau), Bukavu (RD Congo), with on-site missions of teachers, doctors and residents.

 

Review and Assessment

Since 2007, the University of Pavia has coordinated fourteen monitoring and evaluation projects in different countries. In collaboration with CISDA (Afghanistan), AVSI (Uganda), Sant’Egidio (Malawi and Mozambique), APURIMAC (Peru), CUAMM (South Sudan).

Since 2020, the University of Pavia has been included in the DGCS EVALUATIONS list of service providers for the evaluation of development cooperation initiatives, in the ECODEV, HUMANDEV and FOOD sectors. Pavia is among the only three Italian universities registered in the list of evaluation services.
